What's New in Maple 11?

What's New in Maple 11?
Smart Documents
Maple 11's intuitive user-interface eliminates the learning curve so common with other mathematical software. Its smart document environment automatically captures all your technical knowledge in an electronic form that seamlessly integrates calculations, explanatory text and math, graphics, images and sound, and more. New features in this release include:
Self-documenting context menus automatically create a record of your actions while you solve your problem
2-D Plotting
- 2-D math can appear in titles, labels, legends, and tickmarks
- Extensive plot annotation features allow sketching, adding text, and drawing of lines, arrows, and shapes on plots using the new drawing canvas tools
- Other areas of improvement include rendering speed, tickmark placement, legend placement, line styles, point styles, animation with trace, and density plots
A customizable Favorites palette allows you to group your frequently used expressions, symbols, and other palette selections together in one convenient location
The Back-Solver assistant allows you to instantly solve for any variable in your formula, given the values of the other parameters. You can also plot the behavior of your formula as parameters vary
The Special Functions assistant and the Scientific Constants assistant give you easy access to databases of values and properties
Over 65 new task templates for Calculus and Algebra using computations taken from typical undergraduate math courses. Over 35 of these templates provide a point-and-click interface for interactive problem solving
Slide show mode lets you turn your Maple document into an instant slide show for presentations. During the slide show, embedded components, such as buttons and sliders, are active and plots can still be rotated
Enhanced numeric formatting includes scientific and engineering notation, currencies, and custom-built. Formatting is applied using Excel(R)-like interactive tools
Annotations, such as article references and assumption information, can be added to text and math. Notes appear as pop-ups, separate from the main text
The handwriting recognition feature lets you experiment with a preview version of developing technology for understanding handwritten mathematics
Inter-document equation references allow you to keep a single copy of your key equations and simply reference them for other documents. If the source equation changes, referencing documents are updated automatically upon re-execution
Strong Mathematical Computation Engine
Maple 11 delivers a vast collection of new and enhanced mathematical functionality for solving modeling and analysis problems, research-like mathematics, and technical education. Highlights include:
The new Graph Theory package provides a comprehensive set of tools for working with graphs and their applications
- Supports directed graphs, undirected graphs, and graphs with edge weights, and includes over 150 functions and over 35 pre-defined special graphs
- Sophisticated algorithms for visualizing graphs in both two and three dimensions have been developed specifically for this package
- Includes tools for the import and export of graph data using other standard formats
The Physics package provides the tools needed for solving a wide variety of problems, from simple applications in classical mechanics to computations in quantum field theory.
- Includes 3-D non-projected vectors, noncommutative variables, spacetime tensors including the indexed differentiation operator, Einstein's summation convention for repeated indices, Pauli and Dirac matrices, Dirac notation for bra-ket quantum state vectors and other mathematical physics objects.
- Supports the use of standard notation and allows you to define a framework of notational conventions and spacetime properties, which are then automatically understood by Maple in calculations.
The new Differential Geometry package features a collection of tightly integrated tools for a wide variety of computations.
- Supports computation in the areas of calculus on manifolds, tensor analysis, calculus on jet spaces, Lie algebras and Lie groups, and transformation groups
- Includes a complete course in Differential Geometry and its applications
Improvements to solvers strengthen our position as the world leader in differential equation solving. Maple can now compute elliptic solutions to various classes of nonlinear first and second order ODEs, and has added an entirely new set of algorithms for finding exact solutions to PDEs. New plotting capabilities include an interactive DE plotter for DE exploration
Enhanced solver for high-index Differential Algebraic Equations (DAEs) problems, with support for large systems arising in engineering modeling
The world's best certified polynomial real root finder, incorporating the RS library, is guaranteed to find real roots of polynomial systems. This solver is the fastest in the world for finding all real roots, due to the incorporation of the renowned FGb library, the world's most efficient Groebner bases engine
Efficiency improvements throughout, including multi-core processor support and a new option making it easy to write efficient numeric procedures that automatically take advantage of hardware floats
Numerous improvements and additions, including numeric integration and summation, vector calculus, linear algebra, number theory, polynomial ideals, linear recurrence equations, and more.
Connectivity
Maple supports a wide variety of formats for data communication and software interoperability, allowing you to seamlessly integrate Maple with your other tools. New connectivity features in Maple 11 include:
Easy import and export of Excel data files, allowing for the smooth integration of Excel-generated data. You can use these features interactively with the Data Import Assistant and the Matrix Browser or programmatically with commands. These features support partial file import
Enhanced MATLAB(R) link supports a wider range of data conversions
Improved Image Tools package offers increased performance and new manipulation and viewing commands
The Intel(R) Fortran compiler is now one of the supported compilers for external calling
Recent add-on connectivity products include Maple Toolbox for MATLAB, a tightly integrated numeric and symbolic modeling tool, and BlockBuilder(TM) for Simulink(R), a first principles physical modeling environment (available separately; Maple Toolbox for MATLAB is included with Maple 11 for certain license types)
