Abstract This paper discusses the variousaspects involving the research and development of smart grids. Discussed areapplications going from large grid renewable integration, systems tomicro-grids. Load scheduling and power balance, communications issues,understanding customer behavior, large area protection, distribution controlare only some aspects of the challenge of making power grids more robust, moreintelligent. The potential complexity of such smart grids requires careful studyand analysis before actual realization.
