I prefer to have a discussion in terms of forming/stamoing analysis using Abaqus Standrd and Abaqus Explicit.
1: Motivation behind metal forming simulation
a: cost saving,
b: time savings
c: improved product quality
2: There are two types of metal forming simulation in Abaqus, Bulk forming and Sheet metal forming.
Bulk forming: this process form solid objects and are modeled with continuum elements. It is also calssified into Steady-state and transient processes. Examples of steady state are drawing, rolling and other extrusion processes. Examples of traient processes are forging, upsettign, coining and certain extrusion processes.
Steady state process are generally better modeled with Eulerian approach, where element is fixed in space. Adaptive meshign is used with Abaqus Explicit to model this steady state process.
Transient state process zre usually best modeled with Lagrangian method---the element mesh follows the materials.
a: Rezoning may be used in Abaqus/Standard to improve mesh quality and
b: Adaptive meshing is used to maintain a high quality mesh throughout the analysis.
Hope this article can give you basic understanding of forming analysis in ABQUS...
