When a pile is loaded laterally, a gap may open between the pile and the host medium. If the load is reversed, the pile first must traverse this gap before it can load the host medium on the opposite side. The effect of a gap is considered by setting the gap-use flag to on.

当桩承受水平荷载的时候，桩体和周围介质（土体）之间会产生一定的间隙。如果荷载再反向施加，桩体在向另一侧介质传递荷载之前首先要越过这个间隙，FLAC通过把间隙使用标志设置为打开状态来考虑这种间隙效应。
