The Automotive Research Center (ARC) is a University-based U.S. Army Center of Excellence for advancing technology of high fidelity simulation of military and civilian ground vehicles. It represents the key basic research partner of the National Automotive Center at the Research, Development & Engineering Command in Warren, Michigan. The ARC was established in 1994 at the University of Michigan in partnership with Howard University, the University of Iowa, Wayne State University, and the University of Wisconsin. In 1997 the partnership base expanded and now includes Clemson University, Oakland University, the University of Tennessee, and the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
Our mission is to study and demonstrate the creation of a flexible, agile simulation system composed of a hierarchy of models of varying resolution that can be tailored to meet a range of simulation objectives and can significantly impact the product development process of military and commercial automotive manufacturers. The Center supports development of a realistic distributed interactive simulation network for designing large complex systems, and promotes technical and cultural interaction between the defense and civilian automotive sectors.
In recent years the Center has increased its emphasis on research involving high mileage, low polluting vehicles, particularly those employing hybrid powertrains. In addition to automobiles, the Center addresses the new high technology needs for large trucks and off-road vehicles as well as robots.
Research
Our research focus is towards a flexible and distributed simulation system.
For example, one 'customer' sector, typically an OEM, may require high fidelity modules that can fit into an existing simulation system. Another, possibly a supplier, may need an overall simulation system to test a specific module or component; whereas a third may need real-time simulation for operator-in-the-loop tests, and a fourth may need very accurate albeit slower simulations for design purposes.
The Center is studying the creation of modular templates that allow tailoring a particular simulation task to the required application. Both vehicle and powertrain systems are addressed, encompassing the disciplines of structural durability, dynamic response, vibration and noise behavior, system controls and sensors, and engine controls and combustion. ARC research has five thrust areas, as indicated below:
Thrust 1: Dynamics and Control of Vehicles and Mobile Robots
Thrust 2: Human Centered Modeling and Simulation
Thrust 3: High Performance Structures and Materials
Thrust 4: Advanced and Hybrid Powertrains
Thrust 5: Vehicle System Integration, Optimization, and Robustness
One of ARC's special strengths is that its research activities encompass detailed, high fidelity simulation modules, backed by experimental verification, as well as system integration technologies that connect individual models to meet system level objectives.
