Masher and hg_boy are correct. It is basically based on the concept of damge equivalence. In the auto auto industry, we call it block loads development. That means you want to convert the random road loading into couple blocks of load with constant amplitude in order to be replicated in the testing lab.
" P% m, G4 M% Z6 V# RThere might be hundreds of different loadings in the data collection, but, somehow you got to trim off those loads which will not cause any damge at all. And reduce the load cases to a reasonable number that the lab can duplicate (say 3 or 5 different loads through rain flow counting). To do so, you got to tweak a little bit among the loads to make the damage equivalent.
