Yes, exactly.
1) Once the material yields it should remain plastic. I am afraid the second fig and the third fig were captured in different time since their distribution are identical.
2) The approach in the paper only gives a bound to estimate the max. deflection. Actually, elastic deflection and localised deformation are ignored(As pointed out by LanYa, the region near contact will yield first thus a localised region takes place). While in FEA results, all deformations are taken into consideration.
3) I have not tried for the case of 0.618*sigma_0 since the main objective of this simulation is to check the capability to capture diagonal yield line.
Originally, I am very intersted with the diagonal yield line presented in the paper. I also imagine the yield line for the case of a circular metal plate subjected to low-velocity impact. Nevertherness, I can not go forward further since this topic has little to do with my project.
