The trend in the plastic forming is a big topic. For the sheet metal forming domain, in my point view, Improving the formability of high strength/weight ratio materials is the hottest topic.
1. Forming of high strength steels (HSLA, DP, TRIP, MART and CP)
Forming High strength steel can save the weight of vehicle by providing same strength at lower volume and weight of materials. THis is a trend in major industrial countries. However, major problems in the forming of high strength steels are: lower ductility, higher springback and high requirements of the press capability, higher interfacial contact pressure at the tooling interface thus shortening the tooling life.
2. Forming of light weight materials, such as magnesiunm alloys. Major problem in the forming magnesiunm alloys is the every poor formability at the room temperature and the thermally improved formability is sensitive to the temperature and forming speed, thus the current major manufacturing method is casting or semisolid forming. New forming process is needed to be developed to solve the problem.
3. Forming of aluminum alloys. Aluminum alloys have lower formability at the room temperature, although is much better than magnesium, since lower UY, the applied blank holder force is lower thus the wrinkling and springback are problems to be concerned. Another problem in the forming of aluminum alloys is the galling at the interface, this is the major problem of die maintenance cost.
Many forming processes, such hydroforming, tailor welded blank, electromagnetic forming, blank holder force control and warm forming, and surface treatment, such as hard coatings, are developed and investigated to address the above problems. |
