In the United States there is a growing trend towards larger vehicles, even when a much smaller vehicle will suffice, leading to an increase in the average vehicle mass center height. Some drivers have also associated the increased vehicle size with increased safety, leading to more aggressive driving behaviors. In addition, consumers are often exposed to misleading commercials concerning the capabilities of Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV’s). These factors, among others, have increased the number of roll over occurrences, especially in SUV’s. For this project, we have elected to model, design and control an active roll bar.
Roll bars are devices used to reduce load transfer during aggressive cornering/turning maneuvers, and thus reducing roll, improving handling characteristics and safety. Our active roll over prevention system improves on this by actively adjusting the rolling stiffness of the vehicle. For our simulations, we started with a modified Yaw/Roll Vehicle Model, using our roll bar actuator as the input. Other system modeling highlights include the Magic Tire Formula, and the MacAdam Driver Model for road following. |
