Abstract: A back analysis algorithm was developed and applied to determine the main parameters for tunnel design, elastic modulus (E) and ratio of horizontal to vertical stress (K). It is based on direct search method and constructed using FLAC, a commercial finite difference program. To find the most appropriate back analysis algorithm among the optimisation techniques, three algorithms of direct search techniques were adopted and the results were compared. Results show that univariate method and alternative univariate method can successfully search the optimal parameter values regardless of initial ones, while pattern search method sometimes fail. The developed code was applied to a model to verify the validity and to estimate the efficiency of the algorithm. Verification by theoretical solutions and published results of Gens’ research was successful. Application to a tunnel showed that the proposed system could be successfully applied to real tunnels to determine design parameters.
