Terzaghi, the role of this branch of civil engineering in current design practice as well and its experimental and theoretical capabilities are examined Significant contributions of geotechnical engineering to the solution of important design problems are discussed by reference to examples of two important projects: stabilization of the leaning Tower of Pisa and the suspended bridge over Messina Strait.
