The cavability of Longwall top coal is a major issue in longwall top coal caving (LTCC) method. It is influenced by many factors, like coal strength, cover strength, top coal thickness, joint/cleats in seams and overlying strata. Numerical modeling is a powerful way to study this issue. DEM probably is the appropriate method to do LTCC modeling since it can realistically reproduce the process of crack initiation, propagation and coalescence which is essential to top coal caving. The following plots show the process of LTCC using PFC and UDEC, respectively.

These are just preliminary models with some problems. Optimization of the models will be done in the future. Any suggestions are very welcome.
