Hourglass actually is corresponding to zero energy mode. When the stiffness matrix is not full rank, hourglass may appear in solution. There were many researches had been carried out on this topic. So far, there is no efficient and effective way to handle it. In addition, hourglass mode can be global or local depending on many factors such as BCs, material. In my view, once the global hourglass appears, the solution can not be trust no matter how its energy percentage is. In mode analysis, hourglass will cause serious problem. Therefore, I always use fully but not reduced integration to avoid this issue. |
